Popular Places
Pylos
The calm of today belies a troubled past in a city synonymous with the Battle of Navarino. Now it rests peacefully, built in the shape of an amphitheatre below Neokastro, reminiscent of an island hamlet.
Gialova
The beautiful village is about six kilometres north of Pylos. The beach part of the village consists of two short streets, one fronting the Bay and the other at right angles to it, leading to the main Pylos-Kiparissia road.
Methoni
The seaside new town of Methoni, famed for its low stone homes, one beside the other, with their lovely patios and fragrant flowers, will charm you and invite you to enjoy its beaches, cafes and restaurants.
Kalamata
Between the peaks of Mt Taygetos and the Gulf of Messinia. Walking barefoot in the sand will give you plenty of time to appreciate Kalamata’s seemingly endless beach, stretching 5km from Verga to the port of Kalamata.
Marаthopоli
A small fishing villаge οn thе west coast оf Pelоpοnnesе, сlose tо Navarinο bаy. The placе is known fоr its fish tаvernas wherе yοu сan eаt fresh fish and sеa foоd. Therе is no beach inside thе villаge but you can visit Prоti island which is just in frοnt of Mаrathоpοli.
Messini
Conveniently located just minutes from Kalamata International Airport, Messini is a vibrant and authentic market town set in the fertile heart of the Messinian plain. Morning markets, local tavernas, and genuine warmth paint a picture of Messinia.
Kyparissia
The modern town is located within a walking distance from the long, sandy beach, while on the slopes of the hill above there is the Old Town of Kyparissia. An old Medieval Castle stands on top of the hill, offering a nice view of the sea and the sunset.
Stoupa
The coastal village of Stoupa is built by the sea, with its “back” to Mount Taygetos. It is 45 km away from Kalamata, and it’s famous for its popular and cosmopolitan beach Kalogria.
Kardamyli
A true gem of the Peloponnese, Kardamili enchants with its crystal-clear waters, lush mountain backdrop, and effortless blend of beaches, culture, and history. It is 38 kilometres from Kalamata.
Access Messinia
The airport of Kalamata has several international flights from main European cities from February to November. There are about three weekly flights to Athens. The airport of Kalamata is located 10.5km west of the Kalamata city. The airport is also connected to Thessaloniki twice a week.
Several public transport buses connect Kalamata to Athens (3 hours), and other cities in the Peloponnese. Patra is the main port to arrive at Peloponnese by ferry boat from Italy and from the Ionian islands.
Archaeological Sites
Neokastro, Pylos
This is possibly one of the best-preserved fortresses in Greece and looking around it is an indescribable experience.
Methoni Fortress
Founded by the Venetians in the 13th century As soon as you set foot on the stone bridge with its 14 arches, you’ll be impressed by the castle and its imposing gate.
Ancient Messene
Just 30km north of Kalamata, the city of Messene, founded in the 4th century BC, is becoming one of the most exciting archaeological sites in Greece.
The Palace of Nestor
A place dear to Homer — the legendary seat of King Nestor of Pylos. At its peak around 1300 BC, this hilltop citadel was the undisputed royal heart of the region.
Temple of Apollo Epicurius
Dating to around 420 BC, the Temple of Apollo Epicurius is among ancient Greece's most iconic monuments — and its most unusual.
Koroni Castle
A Byzantine fortress since the 6th or 7th century, Koroni Castle crowns a strategic promontory at the entrance to the Messinian Gulf.
