First Day Itinerary
08:00 – From Athens or other Location
We collect you and your gear from your home or hotel.
12:30 — Methoni
Your first stop is the charming Methoni. We gather at a carefully selected local café or taverna for a light snack and a drink, taking in the first glimpse of the bay before the photo tour begins.
13:30 — Methoni Fortress Photo Shoot
Midday sun is harsh — we will use it deliberately to teach you how to work with bad light instead of avoiding it.
Teaching Point 1: Leading Lines & Symmetry
The stone causeway to the sea tower is the single best composition anchor in the fortress. We will study center-framing vs. off-center rule of thirds using the same subject.
Teaching Point 2: Scale Storytelling
We will try to photograph the massive Venetian walls including a human figure small in frame to communicate scale, then a tight detail shot (weathered stone, arrow slits, moss) to contrast.
Teaching Point 3: High-Contrast Midday Light
Shooting into hard shadows: exposing for highlights and letting shadows go black (graphic, high-contrast Mediterranean look) rather than fighting for even exposure.
Teaching Point 4: Sea + Fortress Separation
The fort surrounded by water is ideal to try a polarizer filter to cut glare and saturate the blue-green sea against pale stone.
Settings to Be Taught
Polarizing filter, rotate to find max sea saturation.
f/8–f/11 for wall textures and depth in wide shots.
Spot metering exercise: meter for sky vs. meter for stone, compare histograms.
Assignment
One symmetrical frame of the causeway, one scale shot, one abstract texture detail. Compare results as a group — “three ways to see one subject.”
16:00 — Pylos & Neokastro Photo Shoot
Light is softening but still directional — We will study directional light and use shadows as leading lines and to add drama! Ideal to understand how shadow direction shapes a fortress (a subject in general) differently than a flat midday light as at Methoni’s Fort.
Teaching Point 1: Elevated Framing
Neokastro sits above Navarino Bay. We seek and start from the highest accessible vantage point first, then work downward, rather than starting at ground level.
Teaching Point 2: Layering
Fortress walls (foreground) → bay water (midground) → Sfaktiria island (background) is a classic three-layer composition. We identify and isolate each layer with different focal lengths.
Teaching Point 3: Warm Stone in Low-Angle Light
As sun lowers, the sandstone walls pick up warm tones. We discuss white balance and color tones: shooting “as shot” vs. correcting warmth vs. deliberately pushing it for different moods.
Teaching Point 4: Architectural Framing
Arched gates and window openings as natural frames-within-frames for views of the bay.
Settings to Be Taught
Wider apertures (f/4–f/5.6) for a compressed telephoto layered shot of the bay.
Narrower (f/8+) for full architectural depth shots.
HDR discussion; bracketed exposures for in-camera or later editing.
Assignment
One layered bay composition, one frame-within-a-frame shot through an archway.
As golden light settles over the water, your group gathers for a long, unhurried Messinian meal at one of our carefully selected local restaurants. Fresh seafood, locally pressed olive oil, regional cheeses, and Peloponnesian wines. A Messinian dinner with views over the bay — the perfect setting to review the day’s images together as a group. There is no better ending.
20:30 — Check-in at Your Messinian Retreat
The day has been extraordinary. Now it is time to rest in equal measure. We offer a handpicked selection of accommodation — from intimate boutique hotels and traditional guesthouses that capture the soul of Messinia, to private villas and houses where you can truly exhale.
Second Day Itinerary
07:00 — Morning Shoot at Voidokilia Beach
This is the golden-hour anchor of the workshop — probably the most photogenic location on the itinerary.
Voidokilia sits within a protected Natura 2000 area — Drone use may be restricted here. Staying off dune vegetation is necessary for responsible location photography.
Teaching Point 1: Shots from above vs. from the sand
Voidokilia’s famous omega/horseshoe shape only reads from elevation. We will ascent the hill near Old Navarino castle above the beach. Understand the difference between the “iconic wide” (elevation + wide-angle) and the “intimate low” (ground-level, dune grass foreground, minimal gear).
Teaching Point 2: Foreground dune grass
Getting low, using dune grass or sand ripples as a foreground element with shallow depth of field, subject placed in the curve of the bay.
Teaching Point 3: Golden-hour shadow texture on dunes
Light at 07:00 reveals textures invisible at midday. A key technical lesson: side-light reveals texture, front-light flattens it.
Teaching Point 4: Silhouettes
If the sun angle allows this is a good opportunity to learn silhouette technique: expose for the sky, subject goes fully dark, works well with a person walking the shoreline.
Teaching Point 5: Long exposure option
If tripods and ND filters are available, we will photograph with a slow shutter speed to make the calm lagoon water look smooth, and a fast shutter to freeze the wave texture on the open-sea side.
Settings to be taught
Wide-angle (16–24mm equiv.) from elevation point for the horseshoe shot.
35mm to 85mm equiv. for intimate ground-level compositions.
ND filter + tripod, 1–5 sec exposures for long exposures.
Manual white balance.
Assignment
One elevated horseshoe-shape shot, one ground-level foreground/background composition, one silhouette or texture-focused frame.
09:30 — Breakfast, Gialova
A relaxed breakfast in the village, with time to review the morning’s shots before the day continues.
11:00 — Accommodation Checkout
12:00 — Gialova Lagoon Photo Shoot
Harsh overhead sun again — We deliberately close the workshop with the same “hard light” challenge as Day 1’s opener, so we can measure how much we have improved at handling it.
Teaching Point 1: Reflections
Calm lagoon water is the strongest asset here. We shoot low to the waterline to maximize reflection symmetry (sky, reeds, any structures).
Teaching Point 2: Wildlife & bird watching etiquette
Gialova is a wetland stopover for flamingos and other birds seasonally. We use long-lens technique (200mm+), staying on paths/hides, not approaching or flushing birds, and patience-based shooting rather than chasing subjects.
Teaching Point 3: Minimalism/negative space
flat water, reed lines, and open sky make this the ideal spot to learn negative space and minimalist composition as a contrast to the dense, layered fortress shots from Day 1.
Teaching Point 4: Midday contrast handling, round two
Direct comparison exercise: revisit the Methoni lesson on exposing for highlights, now applied to water instead of stone.
Settings to Be Taught
Telephoto (200mm+) with fast shutter (1/1000+) for any bird activity.
Possible use of Polarizer again here. We explore how removing too much reflection can be a mistake — dial the filter back for reflection shots vs. full-on for water clarity shots.
Small aperture for reed-line minimalist shots with clean single-subject framing.
Assignment
One reflection shot, one wildlife/long-lens shot (if subjects present), one minimalist negative-space composition.
Workshop Wrap-Up Exercise
Participants pick their single best frame from each of the four stops and present a 3-sentence explanation of the composition rule or technique they applied.
This reinforces retention better than a lecture recap.
15:00 — Lunch by the Water
A relaxed final lunch in Pylos or Gialova, with time for one-on-one feedback from your photography specialist and a last look back over the weekend’s favorite frames.
17:30 — Departure for Athens or other Location
Your private vehicle departs for home, arriving in the early evening — camera roll full, and Messinia captured through your own lens.
